# The Retaining Wall Replacement Process, Start to Finish: A Typical Block Wall Job

An illustrative walkthrough of how a failed wall comes out and a segmental block wall goes in — what happens at each step, and roughly how long each one takes.

[NYC Retaining Walls](https://nycretainingwalls.com/) is a licensed and insured retaining wall contractor for all five boroughs, and this post walks through the retaining wall replacement process on a typical job: an old wall that has failed comes out, and a segmental block wall (SRW) goes in. **This is an illustrative walkthrough of a typical job, not a customer story** — there’s no client, address, date or result behind it. It describes the sequence the work follows. Every duration below is a typical range; access, weather, soil, the engineer’s schedule and DOB review all change them.

## Step 1: Site visit and written price

The [free site visit](https://nycretainingwalls.com/contact/) takes about 45 minutes: length, exposed height and lean get measured, and the drainage, cracks and whatever sits above the wall get recorded. We also check DOB records for open violations and the Local Law 37 flag.

The written, line-item price usually follows within 2 business days. Under NY General Business Law §771, home improvement work over $500 needs a written contract, so scope, price and payment schedule go on paper first. For budgeting, segmental block runs about **$20–$45 per square foot of wall face** in NYC (HomeGuide’s national $15–$35 × the RSMeans NYC index of 129.1, rounded), plus demolition and disposal; the [replacement cost guide](https://nycretainingwalls.com/guide/retaining-wall-replacement-cost-nyc/) breaks that down.

## Step 2: Engineering and the DOB filing (if needed)

Under 1 RCNY §101-14, a wall **4 feet or taller measured from the top of the footing**, or any wall supporting a surcharge such as a driveway, a building or sloped ground, needs a DOB permit with plans by a licensed engineer or architect. The new wall is built to those stamped plans; we coordinate the filing. Engineering for walls over 4 feet runs roughly **$450–$970** in NYC (HomeAdvisor’s $350–$750 × 1.29) plus DOB fees.

**Typical duration:** a few weeks to a couple of months, mostly design and DOB review. A wall under 4 feet with nothing loading it skips this step. Our [permit guide](https://nycretainingwalls.com/guide/retaining-wall-permit-nyc/) explains the threshold in detail.

## Step 3: Demolition and disposal

The old wall comes down in sections from the top, with the soil behind it cut back to a safe slope. Debris is separated and hauled out; a container on the street needs a DOT permit, usually arranged by the carting company. Behind a rowhouse, debris may leave by hand.

**Typical duration:** one to three days for a residential wall; longer with hand-carry access.

## Step 4: Excavation and the leveling pad

The trench is dug to the depth and width on the plans, the base is compacted, and a leveling pad of compacted crushed stone goes in. The bottom course sits partly below grade on that pad, so its level decides how straight the whole wall will be.

**Typical duration:** one to two days.

## Step 5: Courses, geogrid and the drainage zone

Block goes on in courses, each checked for level and set back by the block’s built-in batter. Behind it:

- **A drainage zone** of ¾-inch clean crushed stone, with filter fabric where the plans call for it so soil doesn’t migrate into the stone.
- **A perforated drain pipe** at the base of the stone, sloped to daylight.
- **Geogrid** — polymer reinforcement laid between courses and rolled back into the soil — at the lengths and spacing the engineer specifies, tying block and soil into one heavier mass.

**Typical duration:** several days to two weeks, depending on length and height.

## Step 6: Backfill and compaction

Soil behind the drainage zone goes back in thin lifts, each compacted with a plate compactor so the backfill doesn’t settle and pull the geogrid. The top is graded so surface water runs away from the wall.

**Typical duration:** runs alongside Step 5, course by course.

## Step 7: Cap

Cap units go on with masonry adhesive to shed water and lock the last course. A bluestone cap can match older stonework nearby.

**Typical duration:** under a day.

## Step 8: Closeout

The site is cleaned and the owner gets a photo set of the footing, drainage and geogrid before they were buried. On a permitted job, the DOB sign-off is closed out with the engineer. If the new wall is 10 feet or taller at any point and fronts a public right-of-way, it falls under Local Law 37: under 1 RCNY §103-09 the first inspection report is due five years after the first work permit if that falls in the borough’s window, otherwise in the next window.

| Step | Typical duration (varies) |
| --- | --- |
| Site visit → written price | ~45-minute visit; price usually within 2 business days |
| Engineering + DOB filing | A few weeks to a couple of months (permit jobs only) |
| Demolition and disposal | 1–3 days |
| Excavation + leveling pad | 1–2 days |
| Courses, geogrid, drainage, backfill | Several days to 2 weeks |
| Cap + closeout | About a day |

## Repair instead?

Not every failed wall needs this; clogged drainage or a lean that anchors can hold may cost far less.
